COLLECTOR GUIDE 04 · MAGNETIC AUDIO
Cassette care
Storage, shell inspection, pressure pads, playback decks, and habits that help a cassette last.
Reviewed July 2026 · Practical home-collection guidanceStore the cassette, not just the recording
Keep cassettes upright in clean cases, away from direct light, heat, damp locations, motors, transformers, and strong speakers. A stable living-space environment is safer than an attic, garage, or basement.
Inspect before playback
Look for a cracked shell, missing pressure pad, uneven wind, creased tape, loose parts, or contamination. Use a clean, maintained deck and stop if the cassette squeals, drags, or sheds material.
Digitize what cannot be replaced
Playback creates wear and machines are becoming harder to service. For unique recordings, make a careful digital preservation copy and at least one separate backup while keeping the original cassette.
