COLLECTOR GUIDE 02 · SAFETY FIRST
Mold identification and isolation
Recognize warning signs, isolate responsibly, and know when a tape should never enter a machine.

Use a bright light and look through both cassette windows. Suspicious growth may appear fuzzy, branching, spotted, or web-like. Dust and lubricant patterns can be confusing, so uncertainty should be treated cautiously.
Isolate the item
Move the cassette away from the collection in a clean, dry container or area. Do not brush, blow, or vacuum the shell in the collection room. Inspect nearby items that shared the same storage conditions.
Choose professional help when it matters
For a valuable release, family recording, widespread contamination, or any uncertain case, contact a preservation or experienced tape-transfer professional. Address damp storage conditions before returning treated items.
