Check the cord, plug, ventilation openings, controls, and connectors. Place the deck on a stable surface with clear airflow. Do not test a valuable tape in an unknown machine.
Use a low-stakes test tape
Listen for grinding, repeated loading attempts, unstable speed, or unusual squealing. Stop immediately if the tape path pulls, wrinkles, spills, or refuses to eject. Forcing controls can turn a service issue into tape damage.
Maintenance is not the same as repair
Exterior dusting and careful connector cleaning are reasonable owner tasks. Transport alignment, power-supply work, internal cleaning, belt replacement, and stuck-tape recovery are better handled by someone with the service manual and proper experience.
